Making of Incense

The traditional method of manufacturing incense sticks involves hand rolling. An adhesive paste usually made of charcoal dust and joss powder is applied to a thin stick of Bamboo. The perfume ingredients are ground into a mixture called a ‘masala’ and is kept aside. The bamboo stick with adhesive is then rolled into the masala, resulting in a finished Agarbatti.

Today, machines that coat the stick with paste and masala are employed by large manufacturers but cottage industries that employ hand-rolling techniques still thrive.
